Rhapsody on Blue, Bellingham
Lead Design: Caryn Friedlander
Materials Funding from Superfeet
This felt/mixed-media piece was a class project created by participants in a 4-day Pomegranate Center Training convened by Tim Costello, Director of Western Washington University’s Center for Service-Learning. This training was in part sponsored by the Whatcom Community Foundation and brought together a diverse group of Whatcom County representatives focused on building stronger communities. As part of the training, led by artist and training participant Caryn Friedlander, class participants devoted over three hundred and ten hours to the creation of Rhapsody on Blue. Inspired by the beauty of Whatcom County, Pacific Northwest Native American mythology, the deep connection to nature our community shares, and a desire to enhance all of our daily lives through art, this piece demonstrates the power of working together and now proudly adorns the reception area of a local clinic.
Dedicated to building strong communities in Whatcom County, this mural commemorates the Orca named Rhapsody (J-32), one of the southern pod resident whales who died in 2014.
