Liberating parking spaces for children
Pomegranate Center created a community gathering place for Terrace Hill, an 18-unit apartment complex owned by the St. Andrew’s Housing Group, a non-profit developer of affordable housing. Prior to this project, Terrace Hill residents had no public space or safe places for their children to play or wait for the school bus except for a steep, narrow road used by cars. We held design workshops with residents to gather input for the new gathering place and amenities. Then with volunteers and donated materials, we constructed a pedestrian path to the bus stop, a bus shelter, and a children’s play area adjacent to an adult seating area in what had been an asphalt parking lot. We distinguished each apartment building from the others with hand-carved and stained entryway frames.
