“Ezperanza” means “hope” in Spanish and refers to the Esperanza Housing Project where seasonal workers (approximately 200 adults and 40 children) live during harvest season. This experimental housing project is made from reconditioned shipping containers and our goal was to create an outdoor gathering place for the community.
We designed a shelter for outdoor gatherings and cooking as well as a play area. Working with University of Washington’s Design Build program, headed by Sergio Palleroni and David Rice, we built straw bale walls to act as benches, wind buffers and walls delineating the new amenities.
