Defining Community

by Tracey Whitten

April 23, 2019

“We often talk about building community, these days, calls for courage… that kind of moral fiber that says: wait a minute, instead of convincing others, I need to consult with others.”

Over the past three decades, Pomegranate Center has witnessed, learned and grown… a lot. We have watched the field of community engagement change from being a “nice-to-have” to a “must-have” for many industries. We have seen the level of civility in community conversation ebb and flow with each political season.

And through all of this, we have grown in the knowledge and experience of what it means –and maybe more importantly, what it takes, to bring collaboration to community processes. Good community collaboration is a challenge and also a beautiful gift.

It is with this experience in mind, and great excitement, that we launch a new video series sharing some of our key learnings from the past 32 years of on-the-ground work. Community engagement that is both meaningful and collaborative is an urgent need today. It is the art and practice to engage people in a way that brings forward the creativity, joy, and possibilities of what could be.

Today, we share the first video in a series of seven to be released over the coming weeks. Let us know what you think and share them with friends. We are excited about bringing our approach to community building to people who haven’t thought about it, are eager to try it, or just need a little bit of inspiration.

Join us as we explore the idea of ‘defining community’.

Check out the rest of the videos too!

Special thanks to the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust for their generous support in the development of the series.
