Walla Walla/Prescott Community Build

March 9, 2014

Pomegranate Center has been working with Walla Walla area leaders to create something the community of Prescott (20 miles north of Walla Walla) will use, love, and be proud of.

Prescott, on the Touchet River, has only 318 residents and a rich history of grass roots community involvement. Led by Jr. High social studies students, the town successfully brought a Walla Walla Rural Branch Library to Prescott in 2003. Sadly, only a year later, the neighboring second-hand store burned down, causing smoke damage to the library and leaving behind an ugly burned-out space.

It took $35,000 to properly clean up the fire debris and except for occasional library events, this centrally located lot across from the Post Office and next to the busiest restaurant in town has sat vacant for the past 8 years.

In addition to leading a community-driven design and build, Pomegranate Center is training locals and developing new leaders in our community-building model. The goal is for them to assist with this project as part of our Fellows Training then use this knowledge for future community-enhancing projects.

Stay tuned to hear how this project will create a stronger sense of place in Prescott while giving all residents a spot to sit, read, enjoy the sunshine, and gather together.
